The BioResource links volunteers with health studies to improve understanding of a wide range of conditions. More than 350,000 people have already taken part, contributing to over 400 published studies that have influenced healthcare in the UK and beyond.
By joining, you help improve patient care, support faster diagnosis and better treatments, and may help prevent illness in others.
Volunteers from under‑represented groups and people with specific health conditions are especially encouraged to take part.
Our active BioResource programmes connect people across the UK with health studies that reflect the diversity of our population, helping ensure research is relevant to everyone.
We are particularly focused on increasing representation from under‑represented groups, including children and young people, ethnic minority communities, and individuals with specific health conditions.
Our DNA, Children + Young People's Health Resource, (D-CYPHR) is for families with children aged 0-15 and supports treatments and care for the children they will become.
Improving Black Health Outcomes (IBHO) BioResource is our newest programme, focusing on understanding health conditions in Black communities, especially Sickle Cell Disease.
Since 2007, we have recruited volunteers with common and rare diseases to support targeted research.
We’re currently recruiting for:
Our short animation explains the process of how a volunteer can provide a sample, where it goes, how it's securely stored and ultimately used to support vital health research.
Each study has its own eligibility criteria. You might be chosen based on variations in your DNA (genetic), your health and lifestyle, or demographic details such as age, weight, gender or biological sex.
Some studies may ask for additional input, such as an MRI scan or a questionnaire.
Hear directly from some of our volunteers about why they chose to support vital health research, and how easy it is to get involved.
"If this study helps us understand how sickle cell disease affects the African Caribbean Community, it will be really helpful.
"By collecting specific information, we can potentially create better treatments and support systems for our community."
"I was really happy to take part in the research. It was so quick and easy to do. A few minutes of my time could really benefit other children.
Knowing that I have a DNA mutation it would have been selfish of me to not take part and help others. I hope lots of others sign up and help."
"I donated to NIHR BioResource because I didn't feel that I was represented well in health research.
"The experience was smooth, simple and clear. It felt really safe! It makes me feel quite proud that I can help people that are exactly like me."
"I signed up to health research because I know times will change and no parent or sibling will ever have to go to sleep or leave the house with the fear their loved one will have taken their own life by the time they return. I want people to know change is coming."
