About IMID BioResource

Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases (IMIDs) are a broad group of common conditions that cause inflammation in the body. They can affect many different areas, but all involve the immune system mistakenly attacking the body.

Examples include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), and Psoriasis.

Key goals

  • Recruitment participants: Around 19,000 people have joined the IMID BioResource
  • Collect samples and data: gathering information to support high quality research
  • Improving recruitment processes: Ensuring sites across England can recruit efficiently
  • Working with PPIE (Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement) groups: Addressing the under-representation of Black and South Asian communities and people with more severe disease
  • Supporting research: Enabling studies researching shared biomarkers, patient outcomes, and the relationship between health, genes and the environment
  • Expanding participation: From October 2024, we aim to recruit more Black and South Asian IMID patients.

The NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is the lead centre for the NIHR IMID BioResource, working with NIHR Newcastle BRC and NIHR Leeds BRC.
