The inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are lifelong inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract that are relatively common affecting just under 1% of the UK population. Histopathological assessment of endoscopic biopsies and surgical resection specimens from IBD patients is vital for the diagnosis and monitoring of disease activity. This is presently limited to qualitative morphological assessment by pathologists. Computational analysis of digital whole slide images (WSIs) can enable rapid objective quantitative analyses of histomorphological features. This project involves the computational analysis of WSI alongside histopathology reports, clinical phenotype and genomic data. The objectives are to assess the ability of computational pathology integrated with clinical and genetic data to provide diagnostic and prognostic information and novel pathophysiological insights.
