Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified a number of genetic variants associated with cardiovascular diseases (e.g. coronary heart disease) and their causal risk factors such as blood pressure and cholesterol levels). However, the precise molecular mechanisms underlying the majority of the implicated genetic variants have remained elusive. Dirk’s research team aims to uncover more about the impact of these variants on the biology of cardiovascular diseases, which is fundamental for developing therapeutic strategies.
