In light of the recent incident relating to UK Biobank data, we would like to assure participants that NIHR BioResource is a separate and unrelated entity, and NIHR BioResource data are not part of the situation reported in the news.
NIHR BioResource does not share participant data with researchers unless there is explicit permission from participants to do so. We only provide access to data after a rigorous process that scrutinises the proposed project, the researchers and their institution, the amount of data requested, and the risk that participants could be re-identified.
We only provide access to the minimum data required to undertake the research, and our standard practice is to provide data in our secure environments, where strict controls are in place. Review by our National Participant Advisory Group, which serves as our participants’ representatives, is very important in reaching a final decision regarding approval of applications.
Download our application form to view the questions we ask researchers.
NIHR BioResource only accepts applications from countries not listed as being under sanction by the UK Government - Government’s guidance regarding restrictions and sanction.
We follow best practice for sharing data and always seek to improve processes in line with current standards. We take our responsibility for protecting your data very seriously.
Summary information for all research projects that the NIHR BioResource approves and supports can be found on our Studies page.
